The County Cork port town of Passage West is located on the west bank of Cork Harbour, about 10 kilometres east of the city of Cork. The majority of the town’s buildings date from the late 18th century, while in the early 19th century the town held its own races. One such meeting took place in July 1817 when the feature race was won by Dandy, owned by Maurice Jones, although no further details have remained about these races.
The Silver trophy shown opposite stood at 6 ¾ inches high and was awarded to Mr Maurice Jones esq who owned Dandy , the winner of the Passage Cup at the meeting held in July 1817. The Cup bears two inscriptions, one on each side:-
